Rate of new Whatcom Covid-19 cases doubles

As of November 16, Whatcom County has had a total of 1,942 confirmed cases of Covid-19 since the start of the pandemic and 52 deaths, according to the Washington State Department of Health. Of those cases, 205 were diagnosed in the past week, more than double the number diagnosed in the previous seven-day period (100) according to the state health department’s data.

In the two-week period ending November 14, the Ferndale school district area had the highest rate of new cases in Whatcom County, with 170 per 100,000 people, according to the Whatcom County Health Department. The Blaine area had a rate of 63 per 100,000 in that period.

In total, 119 people have been hospitalized with the virus in Whatcom County, and three in the past week, according to the state health department.
