The Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) eradicated the first Asian giant hornet nest in the U.S. on October 24. The nest was found two days prior in a tree on private property in east Blaine. WSDA's Pest Program removed 98 worker hornets, 85 of which were vacuumed from the nest and 13 were collected in a net on October 23, according to an October 26 WSDA press release. The state agency plans to cut the tree to determine the nest size, and if the nest had started producing new queens.
